Why this actually happens
Homeowners often assume all damp is the same, but rising damp (moisture wicking up through masonry from the ground, common in older builds without a proper damp-proof course) and penetrating damp (rain pushed through an exterior wall, worse after wind-driven storms on coast-facing facades) need different fixes.
